Research Interests:

TheLaboratoryofNeurotoxicologyiscurrentlypursuingseveralinvestigativeroutestoelucidatethemechanisminvolvedinHIV-1Associateddementia(HAD).Theseroutesinclude:neurogenesis,mononuclearphagocyte(MP)activationinthebrain,HIVviralproteinsandtheirneurotoxiceffects,andthechemokines(chemicalsignals)releasedbyneurons,astrocytesandMPandtheirdirectconsequencesonthebrainenvironment.Whiletheseareasofresearchseemmilesapart,theyareactuallyquitelinked.Studieshaveshownthatneurogenesisplaysanimportantroleintheadultbrainandcanbestimulatedbyneuronalinjury,physicalexerciseorstress.HIV-infectedandactivatedMPcanreleaseviralproteinsandneurotoxins,includingglutamate,thatinjureneighboringneurons.Uponinjury,neuronsreleasechemokinesthatrecruitmoreMPstothesiteofinjury,torepairtheinjuryandpromoteneurogenesisaswellas,ridthesiteofcellulardebrisandviralproteins.InfectedandactivatedMPthenrespondtothesignalsproducedbyneurons,releasingmoreneurotoxins,therbycreatingmoredamageandbeginningyetanotherviciouscycleofinjury.Therefore,byintegratingstudiesofneuroscience,virology,immunology,biochemistryandreceptorpharmacologytoinvestigatetheseareas,theneuropathogenesisofHADcanbefullyexplored.

Long-range Goals:

Themissionofourlabistoultimatelydevelopedrugsthatwillselectivelyinhibitneurotoxinproductionandenhanceneuronalrepairinthebrain.ThesestudieswillnotonlyanswerquestionsregardingHAD,butalsootherneurologicaldiseasessuchasAlzheimer'sdisease.

Ourlaboratoryintegratestechniquesinimmunology,neuroscience,virology,receptorpharmacology,molecularbiologyandbiochemistytostudythemechanismsinvolvedintheneuropathogenesisofHIV-1AssociatedDisorders(HAD).
