威爾比少年時代返回英國家鄉定居，大學時原本在達勒姆主修數學，而後對演戲產生興趣，轉往英國皇家戲劇藝術學院就讀。畢業後開始參與舞台劇及電視劇表演。87年他在第一次擔當主角的電影《莫里斯的情人》中扮演莫里斯，一躍成名，並與另一男主角休葛蘭同獲威尼斯影展最佳男主角。
