【出 處】 《北史·周紀下·高祖武帝》：“背惠怒鄰，棄信忘義。
【由 來】 古時候有一神鳥，名曰：鳳凰。據傳鳳凰身具五德之身，即頭上的圖紋像“德”字，翼上的圖紋像“順”字，背上的圖紋像“義”字，腹上的圖紋像“信”字，胸前的圖紋像“仁”字。戴德、擁順、背義、抱信、履仁即為五德之要。本來背上的應該是“義”字，若改為背的是“信”字，只有棄“義”。“背信棄義”可以引申為：顛倒五德之要，違背仁義之根，君子莫為也。
