人物履歷
1986年畢業於北京師範大學生物系；
1991年於中國科學院水生生物學研究所獲理學博士學位；
1991年7月—1994年8月，山東省醫學科學院寄生蟲病防治研究所，先後任助理研究員、副研究員；
1994年8月—1999年8月，美國密西根州立大學DOE植物研究實驗室，Post-doctoral Research Associate；
1999年9月回水生所任研究員至今。
2012年05月任致公黨湖北省委副主委。
2012年10月任中國科學院水生生物研究所副所長。
2017年02月任武漢市政協副主席。
中國致公黨第十五屆中央委員會委員，十三屆全國政協委員。

2017年2月18日，政協武漢市第十三屆委員會第一次會議第三次全體會議選舉產生了新一屆市政協領導，徐旭東當選武漢市政協副主席。
2017年6月11日至12日，中國致公黨湖北省第四次代表大會在漢召開，徐旭東當選副主任委員。
研究方向
研究藍藻的細胞分化問題，鑑別出參與異形胞（特化固氮的細胞）分化和格式形成的若干基因並證實其功能，研究其調控關係，尤其是發現受主調控因子HetR直接調控的hetZ基因，豐富了異形胞分化和格式形成理論。開展藍藻抗寒越冬分子機理的研究，發現低溫預處理能夠大大強化藍藻對於寒冷光照脅迫的耐受性，揭示出alpha-維生素E和RNA結合蛋白1等因子在形成低溫誘導的寒冷光照耐受性中的重要作用。進行產油微藻選育，獲得了一批優良產油藻株。

中國青年科技獎（第四屆，1994）獲山東省科技進步一等獎（1993年，排名第一）、中國青年科技獎（第四屆，1994）、國家傑出青年科學基金（2008），入選中國科學院“百人計畫”（1999）、國家百千萬人才工程（2009）。
