進入21世紀以來，我國的經濟社會文化繼續保持健康快速的發展，中國經驗日益為世界所矚目。2008年北京奧運會及2010年上海世博會，將進一步加強中國與世界的融通，中國的高等教育也面臨著新的機遇和挑戰，更對高等英語教育提出了新的要求。為了滿足新時期大學英語教育的新需求，經過認真調研和廣泛徵求意見，我社引進了世界著名教育出版機構培生教育有限公司旗下朗文出版社的全球暢銷教材Total English（《大學通識英語》），並由國內大學英語界資深教授根據教育部有關高等教育英語教學基本要求精心改編，使之成為符合我國大學英語教學需求的一套更新穎、更全面、更地道、更實用的英語教材。
《大學通識英語》系列教材具有如下特點：
1．整體設計和編寫結構清晰，邏輯性強，靈活機動，方便教學。《大學通識英語》充分考慮了教育部有關高等教育基礎英語教學要求所明確的學生應當達到的英語學習目標，以及學生和教師在英語學習和教學實際中遇到的各種問題，從確立教學新標準、明確教學方向和目標出發，引導學生和教師有效地、循序漸進地實現既定教學目標。本套教材每個單元輸入內容豐富，並在一開始就交代清楚語法點及“學以致用”（Cando，涵蓋口頭表達、閱讀理解、寫作等多個方面）的學習目標。這種“學以致用”的目標讓學生有了學習的目的和動因，不僅完全清楚為什麼要學習某一課，而且知道如何套用新的語言知識。
2．選材廣泛，主題新穎豐富，語言地道醇厚。《大學通識英語》選材取自英語報章雜誌、電影電視、文學作品、網站及個人交往資料等，按主題劃分成一個個單元。每個單元圍繞主題展開，從聽、說、讀、寫等方面全面演繹主題，幫助學生像日常看報紙、看電視節目或看電影那樣真正地融入教材內容。通過引人入勝的材料來調動學習動力對於學習語言獲得成功是非常重要的。本套教材涉及的話題反映了學生的需求和興趣。學生對每課內容總會有話可說，還能經常有機會交流看法，抒發己見。課堂活動的設計也儘量真實可信，以使學生能夠看到所學語言點在現實生活中大有用武之地。
3．強調教學的整體性和技能訓練的全面完整性，注重培養聽說能力，努力提高實用技能。《大學通識英語》充分體現高等教育英語教學內容和課程體系改革的要求，以“聽、說”為重點，同時又加強“讀、寫”能力的訓練，另外還根據中國學生的實際需求補充了翻譯能力的訓練，把聽、說、讀、寫、譯的技能訓練有機地結合起來，使學生的綜合英語能力能夠得到有效提高。本套教材在語法、辭彙、口語、寫作等實用技能的訓練上都頗具特色。語法自成體系，講解簡明扼要，練習充分完備，幫助學生溫故知新，鞏固語法知識。語音操練列舉了英語音素，引導學生注意發音與拼寫之間的對應關係，掌握單詞正確的發音方法。在辭彙學習方面則採用歸類記憶法，每個單元圍繞一個主題對同一類辭彙集中操練，幫助學生有效地積累辭彙。而口語和寫作練習則與單元主題、辭彙和語法緊密相關，通過“學以致用”（Cando）幫助學生明確目標，循序漸進地掌握英語口語和寫作的基本知識和實用技能。
