為了適應我國政治、經濟、文化、教育的需要,我國各行各業都在學習英語,掀起了一波又一波的熱潮。“你的英語學得怎么樣”、“怎樣才能學好英語”成為大家(包括教師、學生和家長)矚目的問題。英語被看成是一個科目、一個整體。但是相對來說,“你學什麼英語”這個較為具體的問題卻談論得比較少。如果我們再深入一點觀察自己是怎樣學習和使用母語的,就會發現一般人對自己的母語並非全都掌握,例如一個醫生、一個工程師或一個語文教師在工作中所使用的語彙就大不相同。至於法律條文,更不是一般人所能理解的。新中國成立初期,有一個俄語專業畢業的學生被分配到武漢擔任長江大橋建設中的前蘇聯專家的翻譯。有一天專家要他去拿一個cooaxa,在俄語裡,cooaxa是“狗”,而在構詞法里一yxa是“小”的意思。結果他花了幾天找到一條小狗拖去工地,專家見後哈哈大笑,原來c06aqxa除了“小狗”的意義以外,在機械用語裡還有“制動片”的意思。其實英語中的dog也有這個意思,不過一般人很少用到它。
從語體使用的角度看,我們對自己的母語也不是全都懂得的。一般來說,我們掌握三方面的語言:一是語言的核心部分(包括基本的辭彙和語法);二是和我們的職業或專業有關的語言(例如法律語言、會計語言、計算機語言……);三是和個人的愛好有關的語言(例如音樂語言、集郵語言、足球語言……)。母語如此,遑論外語?所以學習一門外語不可能掌握它的全部,除了語言的核心必須學好外,只能根據需要,學習一些和自己有關的語言。這個想法從20世紀60年代就開始流行了,這就是所謂的專門用途語言(LanguageforSpecificPurposes),這類語言已逐步深入到教學大綱和教材、教法的不同層面。在我國的大學英語教育中,首先出現的是供文科和理工科使用的不同的教材,其後又出現了供醫科、農科使用的教材等等。當然,專門用途語言也有許多有待討論和解決的問題,例如怎樣處理基礎和專業的關係、專門化的程式、怎樣講行需要分析等等。
