I can’t find the new words or difficult sentence[sentences] in the paragraph 2[in paragraph 2]. So I read it quickly.
The first sentence of paragraph 3, “But talk to their Teachers, and a very different picture emerges, one that shatters the myths about who cheats and why.” In this sentence, “one” refers to “a very different picture” and “that shatters the myths about who cheats and why” is its attributive clause. The word “shatter” here means “damage or destroy (a person’s beliefs, hopes, confidence, etc)”
The second sentence is a very long sentence. But it’s not very difficult. Here, “it is a picture”, I think it is not true picture, it is actual phenomenon.
In the paragraph 4, there is a new phrases [phrase]“cut down on”, I think it means reduce the amount of something that you eat, buy, use, etc. And there is a new word I don’t its meaning. So I find it at the expressions of the book. It means a meeting or short course on a specific topic.
A new word “abdicates” in the first sentence of paragraph 5. We can find the expression, it means fail to fulfill or undertake.
“A child cheats on an exam and his parents get outraged,” said Young Jay Mulkey, president of the American Institute for Character Education, a San Antonio-based foundation that helps teachers develop students’ self-esteem. In this sentence, “a San Antonio-based foundation” refers to “the American Institute for Character Education”. Here “foundation” means “an institution that is founded and supported by an endowment”. The American Institute for Character Education is a private foundation with money to help train teachers to know how to develop self-esteem in their students. Some people in the US feel that not enough attention is paid to this kind of training in the normal teacher training classes, so they try to make it available to the classroom teachers who feel that lack of self-esteem is a problem for their students.
In [the] next sentence, an “expense ACCOUNT” is “an account of business expenditures for which an employee will be reimbursed”.
Continue reading, in the paragraph 8[in paragraph 8], there is a phrase “crib sheet”. It means “a piece of paper on which a list of answer or information used dishonestly by a student during an examination”. And other new phrase “for one”. This is a very useful phrase at our writing. It means as one example.
