The “individual” here means every one of a company and I can’t find any explanations about “make an impact”. The author tells us the quality and efforts of its employees are play an important part in it. Then he gives us an example about Compaq Computers to illustrate this view. “Like most companies in the computer field, Compaq expects its people to work long and hard to achieve big results quickly.” We can find, in the current society, competitions everywhere. And products of the IT field are easily copied and obsolete. So they prolong the working hours to produce more products than others’.
