Unit6 two

After reading paragraph one to paragraph eight, I have primary known a lot of knowledge about the ads. I understand some exquisite technique that be used in the ads by advertisers. I know that the most ads fall into the category of neither bold lies nor helpful consumer information. We can not deny that the most people will be effect by the ads, so I think it is very necessary for us to distinguish between the true aspects and the illusion aspects. In paragraph nine to paragreph fifteen, the auther explains the different types of ads, it will helps us to know the ads well and benefits us quite a lot in our daily life.

When read the first sentence in paragraph nine, I am puzzled by the word “weasel”, so I refer to the online dictionary, I find it means “a small thin furry animal that kills and eats rats and birds”. In this moment, there are a lot of interrogation marks in my mind.what is “the weasel claim”? so I continue the reading. I find that in the sentence “but disintegrate into hollow meaninglessness on analysis are weasels” the word “on” is not the usual meaning as we know, it means “at the time of”. For example, in the sentence “On hearing the news of the air attack most foreigners headed for the border.” the “on” has the same meaning. The author says “a weasel word is a modifier that almost contradicts the claim that is made”, I want to ask the readers whether you found something contradicts the claim in ads in the past time and whether you pay attention to the claim. I think if you study to find out the claim that appear substantial at first glance but disintegrate into hollow meaninglessness on analysis, you will know something is or not true, and it will help you know the production truly. I think “the weasel claim” means the claim is very well on surface but, in fact, it is meaningless. So we must look below the sueface of the weasel claim.

In the paragraph ten , I can easy understand the meaning. The “water is wet” claim is could also be used to the other companies that with the same production.so if you meet the “water is wet” claim, you must know the meaning of it and you can buy the same thing with different brond, because they have the same effect or make with the same thing.

When read the paragraph eleven, I know the “so what” in “the ‘so what’ claim” is used to show that you do not think something that has been mentioned is important. I think this type of ads is much better than others for the customers. You could know the advantage about the product, it could make you choice the product much more easily (if the ads is true and it will make the better effect than the same product). You will ask “so what”, because you do not know the effect of the product. I think you had better make a reach about the product’s effect before you buy it.

I think the scientific or statistical claims use some scientific words to make the product has much more advantage than others, because the person are believe science very much. If the advertisers use some specific numbers in the claim. I think, you will pay more attention on it and believe in it much more. The most people think the scientific things is the best. So I guess the most people will be greatly influenced by the scientific or statistical claims in their daily life.

When read the paragraph thirteen, I am puzzled by the words “compliment” and “flatter”, are they have the same meaning? So I refer to the online dictionary, the word “compliment” means “to say something nice to someone in order to praise them”. And the word “flatter” means “to make someone look as attractive as they can” in this sentence. Sometimes they have the same meanings. I can’t understand the meaning well about the first claim, the two “rights” are puzzled me, I think the first “right” could be an adjevtive, means “suitable”, and the second “right” could be understood both adjective and adverb, it means “suitable” or “exactly”.

As all of us know that the rhetorical question could streng then the word, and give the people much deeper impression. I think it will make the ads get the aim much faster. If the viewer or listener take part in the claim, they will remember it for a long time.

From what has been mentioned above, we can come to the conclusion that even if you avoid looking of ads, they still affect you. Because the advertisers have a series of ways to make you want to buy the product. I think it’s unwise of you to buy products just because you see them advertised on television or anywhere else. However, advertising can be used as a source of information if you want to buy sometings.
