1996年，R. Kelly為籃球上帝麥可·喬丹(Michael Jordan)的電影《Space Jam》錄製的單曲《I Believe I Can Fly》成為了他最偉大的單曲之一，在1997年度第40屆格萊美頒獎中，R. Kelly憑藉著這首單曲，而一舉獲得了最佳影視歌曲(Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television)，最佳R&B男歌手(Best Male R&B Vocal Performance)，最佳R&B歌曲(Best Rhythm & BluesSong)三項大獎。這也讓R. Kelly個人的音樂事業進入了全盛期，隨後他創作的單曲《Gotham City》又入選當年的動作大片《蝙蝠俠與羅賓(Batman & Robin)》的電影原聲。在1998年，R. Kelly發行了他迄今為止最為暢銷的專輯《R.》，這張雙CD的大製作專輯的美國本土銷量超過了800萬張。與流行天后Celine Dion合作的單曲《I'm Your Angel》再次壟斷了各大排行榜近兩個月的時間。
