This weekend I started to read the first article in unit 2. It concentrates on the topic of human behavior. There are four articles talking about different human behavior. The title of the first article is “what, me? Showing off?” My grandmother told me [that]the peacock displays its feather is showing off. What’s the author’s opinion of showing off? In the first six paragraphs, the author narrated three situations of showing off in his opinion.
In the first paragraph, the author said [mentioned]the Wilson’s annual party. There is a western culture in my common sense. They often hold the party in their spare time. At the party, everyone always is [is刪去]gorgeously dressed and tries their best to express themselves. And the writer used the simple words “blazing eyes”, “throbbing voice” to describe the woman how deeply cares about those events.
When I read one word “injustice”, I knew the meaning of “justice” is fairness. And the prefix “in” always represented negative statement, so “injustice” is opposite to it. Meanwhile, I learned others negative prefix such as “ir”, “un”. Word “anguish” is confused to me. This looks like the “anger”, so I guess it means angriness or pain. I looked up it in the dictionary in order to justify my surmise. It means mental or physical suffering caused by extreme pain or worry. I also found its synonym such as “anxiety”, “grief”, “sorrow” which I learned in the past.
In the remaining of paragraph, the author said “she’s showing off”, “they’re showing off”, “what we also are doing is showing off”. Is she showing off? Are they showing off? Are we also showing off? To some degree, I think, they is not showing off. If the young woman doesn’t care about them, she also has no able to [can]talk about them. Maybe it is their habits communicating others[communicating habit]. Maybe we complain about how tired we are because [for]relief our stress of life, not to showing off. So I don’t agree with the idea of author completely.
