來自西班牙的流行、搖滾樂隊La Oreja de Van Gogh（梵谷的耳朵）是在1996年，由一些在當地一所大學遇見的年輕音樂人所組建的。吉他手Pablo Benegas，BASS手Alvaro Fuentes，鍵盤手 Xabi San Martin和鼓手Haritz Garde以前只是演奏一些非主流搖滾樂，直到主唱 Amaia Montero 加入以後決定開始製作一張DEMO唱片。不久之後樂隊開始在塞巴斯蒂安的第一場流行、搖滾演唱會，稍後有幸和Sony mUSIC簽約。而樂隊的風格卻和梵谷這位印象派大師的藝術形象“背道而馳”，走的是拉丁民謠以及舞曲路線。

在短暫的修整後，他們又投入了第二張專輯的創作中。這部專輯名為《El Viaje de Copperpot》，採用了新的製作組和豪華的錄音室，使得這部專輯成為樂隊眼中珍貴難忘的一部。《El Viaje de Copperpot》延續了梵谷之耳的風格，但充滿了新的觀念，熱力四射，鞏固了他們第一部專輯的成就。毫無疑問，這是他們的音樂道路上的一次進步。《El Viaje de Copperpot》開頭就是一首《Cuídate》（小心），這首單曲不但會使以前的歌迷喜愛上本專輯，同時也仿佛在提醒歌迷對後面突如其來的歌曲做好準備。如果歌迷不是病入膏肓的pop痴迷者，那它可能會對後面的帶有beat和blues風格的《Soledad》（孤寂）感到驚訝。Amaia繼續歌唱，離別在她的歌中也不在只是悲傷。為了專輯整體氣氛的需要，出現了《París》這首帶有酒吧和夜總會色彩的合感傷色調的單曲。這首歌中Amaia的聲音與其它幾首歌比較有所調整，但是這首名為巴黎的歌曲，其實和巴黎沒有多大的聯繫。一陣《Pop》過後，我們聽到的是一首帶著對Bruja Averia戲謔的崇敬的《Dicen que dicen》（隨他說去）。而《La playa》（沙灘）則是表達了一種寧靜閒適，但卻在熱烈中 但卻在熱烈中結尾，向人們預示了那一陣將振奮《La chica del gorro azul》（藍帽女孩）的風。對過去的回憶是他們喜愛的一個話題，也是他們的一個標記。隨著越來越強的節奏，《Mariposa》(蝴蝶)向樂海航游者帶來訊息和疑問：我們是什麼？我們何去何從？生命是不是偶然的集合？如果當初我們父母做愛時多堅持了幾秒，今天的我們會是怎么樣的呢？Amaia像是在對自己發問，人生中即使是再謹慎的事情，一個小小環節的紕漏，也會引發一系列不可預知的後果，這就是蝴蝶效應！人生無測，如何預備未來，誰又會去這樣做呢？這是梵谷之耳的哲思。另一首歌有著電影般的名稱，Los amantes del Circulo Polare(極圈情人)。這首歌的寓意和Tantas cosas que contar有所共通。《Tu pelo》(你的頭髮)則是以一種浪漫的眼光審視枕頭上同居幾年的男孩或者是女孩的頭髮！《Tu pelo》(你的頭髮)則是以一種浪漫的眼光審視枕頭上同居幾年的男孩或者是女孩的頭髮！《Desde el puerto》(從港口出發)因為受到了普遍的喝彩，也位列《El Viaje de Copperpot》之中，這首歌顯示了我們對這個在舞台上活躍的組合繼續關注，這個組合不是那種貢獻了一個經典唱片之後就泯然與眾的組合。尤其是在Nigel Walker的監製下，La Oreja de Van Gogh的演唱更加的現代，更加的時尚，運用了更多的先進的音樂技術元素。這五個人能夠在一月到五月末譜作了23首歌，從中精選出了12用來作為專輯內容，這可謂是一個記錄，也體現了這個樂隊的旺盛的生命力。就連《Dedpedida》（離別）這樣的有理由憂傷的歌曲，也他們的演繹也能變得歡暢。

就像la Oreja de Van Gogh以往的流行曲風為他們帶來的始終如一的商業價值一樣，雖然初聽他們的第三張專輯還是有著重蹈以往流行的覆轍，但是這張新專輯Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended To Be Asleep)依然得到了很多的關注與讚賞。除了繼續著他們一貫的風格，懷舊的歌詞，帶著荒謬色彩而讓人過耳不忘得和聲，以及主唱Amaia Montero's 看似脆弱的表白之外，這張專輯的優越性更多的體現在感性的表達和樂曲的編排上。像以往的專輯一樣，MONTERO和鍵盤手Xabiín依然為專輯的大部分的音樂擔綱， 吉他手Pablo Benegas填詞，然而這次的新專輯有了很多讓人意想不到的收穫，比如專輯的主打單曲"Puedes Contar Conmigo" (You Can Count on Me),就是由主唱Montero獨立製作的。在這首歌中，MONTER放棄了以往像是無助的小女孩般的矯揉，也不再唱關於童話傳說的主題，而是真真切切的演繹著這世間最感人的愛情。當最後的和聲徐徐響起的地時候，Montero飽滿的聲線把心碎那一刻的感傷詮釋的淋漓盡致。而在另一首與其他三位音樂人合作的曲目"Tu y Yo”中，他們很明智的用最少的卻有著黑色幽默和現代自我意識的歌詞來表現音樂的主題。樂隊的SanMartín 更是對專輯中的那首"Geografía大加讚賞，這是他們整張專輯中沒有副歌的一首作品，它融合了安第斯管風琴節奏的歡快，虛擬了一個僅有相愛的人存在的獨特民族。除此之外，這張專輯的另一個成功之處就是有很多的音樂實驗部分，像在"Perdóname“開頭的那段BOSSA NOVA（新節奏），以及La Paz de Tus Ojos中那種硬朗的緩緩升起的主音和著很有張力的敲打聲，以及最後一首由電子樂融合著一些帶著莫名的無意識的編曲演繹得和諧，使Montero's的風韻和她出色的嗓音一覽無餘，聽上去猶如另一種鍵盤的聲效。而這張Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida專輯也是la Oreja de Van Gogh最能體現他們才華的一張專輯，對於那些願意拋開內華達（caliente是城市位於林肯縣）的田園誘惑而喜歡感受歐洲紛繁複雜的時尚浪潮的聽眾來說，這樣一張專輯無疑是他們最好的選擇。
Although at first listen la Oreja de Van Gogh's third release might sound like a slick rehashing of the same pop formula that has brought the group consistent commercial success, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended To Be Asleep) merits closer attention. Beyond some similarities to their earlier work — nostalgic lyrics, ridiculously catchy choruses, and lead singer Amaia Montero's seemingly fragile delivery — this album displays far greater emotional and musical range than do their earlier efforts. Montero and keyboard player Xabi SanMartín continue to write most of the music, and guitar player Pablo Benegas most of the lyrics, but there are some notable exceptions, like album opener and first single "Puedes Contar Conmigo" (You Can Count on Me), written entirely by Montero. Here she abandons any former posturing as a helpless little girl, and sings not about a fairy tale, but about love that's flawed and recognizable; when the final chorus slows, the spare outline of Montero's voice shapes a real and exquisite moment of heartbreak. In "Tu y Yo," a collaboration among all three musicians, the lyrics are simpler than elsewhere, but with their wry and modern self-awareness, they are also more clever. SanMartín takes full credit for "Geografía," a song without parallels in their repertoire, harnessing the rollicking gait of Andean pipe tunes and inventing ingenious borders for a nation made up of just two lovers. And throughout the album, there are successful musical experiments, like a bossa nova groove at the beginning of "Perdóname," a harder edged vocal line paired with a driving beat on "La Paz de Tus Ojos," or the nonsense syllables of the unnamed and completely electronic final track that frees Montero's mature and often remarkable voice to sound like another keyboard.Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida is la Oreja de Van Gogh's most accomplished album, and would be an excellent choice for an audience willing to lay the seductions of caliente aside in favor of a distinctly European and new wave-inflected cool.
