Elsevier的標誌原屬於Elzevir printer並沿用至今，上面描繪了一個老人站在葡萄藤纏繞的榆樹下，並題寫了拉丁文Non Solus（不孤單）。它的含義至今仍存有爭議。這個標誌由Isaac Elzevir（Lowys的兒子）於1620年首次引入，並從此印在所有Elzevir的出版物上。毫無疑問，Elzevir家族對他們的標誌充滿自豪，其想要表達的含義卻不為人知。雖然大多數學者認同榆樹代表知識之樹，他們對相互纏繞的葡萄藤的含義卻無法達成共識。
巴黎圖書管理員Adry在1806年提出，榆樹和葡萄藤象徵著Isaac和Abraham Elzevir兄弟之間的紐帶，而那個老人，也就是隱者，象徵著研究的隱秘性。現代藝術歷史學家Lucy Schlüter則提出了一個更加令人信服的解釋。她認為樹下的老者代表一個智慧的學者、一個哲學家——令人想起Erasmus描繪的蘇格拉底，坐在鄉間的樹下帶來碩果纍纍、啟發人心的演講。
在這個意義上，相互纏繞的樹和葡萄藤代表著一種產生果實的關係——因此也傳達了一種寓意。如同Erasmus所言有關樹和葡萄藤的傳統隱喻：“正如葡萄藤，雖然在所有的樹中最加出眾，卻仍然需要莖桿、樹樁或者其他無法結實的樹的支撐，強者和博學之人也需要平凡者的幫助。”
這樣看來，這個標誌代表著傳統符號學中出版商和學者之間的象徵關係。Non Solus的題詞則更加強化了這一信息——學者需要出版商像榆樹那樣提供堅實的支撐，而出版商也同樣需要葡萄藤來結出果實。出版商和學者都無法獨立得到果實，他們都需要對方。這也恰當地表示了Elsevier和它的作者們如今的關係——不是依賴，不是被依賴，而是相互依存。
