Byanymeasureatall,AEKrestoreditsreputationasapowertobereckonedwithinEuropeanbasketballin2004-05.AEKnotonlyreturnedtotheEuroleagueTop16forthefirsttimeinthreeseasons,butalsowouldhavereachedthefirst-everEuroleagueQuarterfinalPlayoffs,ifnotforafewpointsthatcostitatie-breaksituation.Still,tyingatthetopofitsTop16groupwasamajorstepforwardforAEK.TheYellowskeptupthatpaceintothespring,reachingthedomesticplayofffinalsinGreeceandfinishingasrunner-up.Allthingsconsidered,AEKwasoneofthemostsurprisingteamsintheEuroleaguethisseason,althoughitmightalsobesaidthatAEKshouldneverbeunderestimated.Fewclubsanywherehaveitstradition.Havingestablisheditsfirstteamin1899,AEKhasplayednowinthreecenturies.Muchofitsdomesticsuccesswasclusteredbetween1958and1970,whenAEKclaimedsevenGreekLeaguetitles,fourinsuccession.2004-05.In1968,AEKaddeditsfirst-everEuropeantrophy,theSaportaCup,butitsheydayendedwithits1970domestictitle.Inthenextthreedecades,AEKliftedonetrophy,the1981GreekCup,butstartingin2000,theclub’sfortunesturnedagain.AfterwinningasecondSaportaCupthatspring,AEKaddedasecondGreekCuptitle,withathirdtofollow2001,thesameyearAEKmadetheEuroleaguesemifinals.In2001-02,AEKnarrowlymissedtheEuroleagueFinalFour,butdomestically,itreachedthetopagainathomewithitsfirstGreekLeaguecrownin32years.ThattrophywasAEK’sfourthinthreeseasons.Afteracoupledownyears,AEKwasbackstrongin2003-04,tyingforthethird-bestrecordintheEuroleagueTop16andreturningtotheGreekLeagueplayofffinals.Withmomentumbehinditagain,AEKwillbeoneoftheteamstowatchoutforintheEuroleagueduring2005-06.
