I opened my book, turned the page to Unit 2(turn? to the page unit 2), I was ready to read the 19th Paragraph. Suddenly, I was disappointed. I could not understand the first sentence.
What’s the meaning of “I wasn’t the slightest bit shy or self-restrained”? If we get rid of “the slightest bit”, it becomes “I wasn’t shy or self-restrained”, which also can be a sentence, and we also can understand the meaning. So what is the reason? At last, I knew the author wants to express that he does not feel shy or self-restrained at all. This problem solved, another question was coming. I found the tense does not correspond. Why does the author use three different tenses? I read it once and once. In my opinion, showing off and bragging are his actions in the past, and the golden, glowing, glorious thing were happened before his showing off, so here she use (uses)three different tenses.
Then, I began to read the next paragraphs. In the 20th paragraph, the last two words “ever made” interested me. It is an exaggerative way of statement. According to the situation, here the phrase means the author’s husband assesses it is the greatest fried egg in the history, and no one have made such a great fried egg before. Which attracts my attention in the following paragraph is the three questions and the word “gorgeous” appears in each question. “Gorgeous” means beautiful, attractive and pleasant. Obviously, the purpose is to attract everyone’s attention, not only me, but also all the friends of the author’s mother. Indeed, I think she accomplishes.
Now, it was the (kill "the" )time to read the last paragraph of this section. What the paragraph discusses does not really exist, which we can see from the phrase “would have done”. It’s a subjunctive mood. It refers to that something was not happened in the past and here it is just a hypothesis.
