本書作者根據歷年雅思閱讀考題，對出題的範圍進行了總結，把涉及的題材大體分為十二大類別：（1）自然現象，（2）人類歷史上的重大事件，（3）交通運輸，（4）語言，（5）環境保護，（6）動物，（7）建築，（8）社會問題，（9）醫療衛生，（10）農、工、商，（11）教育，（12）科學技術。本書的閱讀訓練部分就是按照這十二個專題分單元編寫的，每個單元包括五篇由短到長的文章，每個單元的練習都覆蓋各種常見題型。這樣的編寫讓考生對每個專題都能得到充分的閱讀訓練，從而熟悉這一專題可能涉及的辭彙、表達方式和出題方式。這樣，在真正的考試中，就不會因為對題材感到生疏而影響閱讀速度。
為了方便考生掌握相關辭彙，本書在每一篇文章後都附了選篇所涉及的辭彙，相應的辭彙在選篇中也用斜體標出，便於考生直接查閱。因為每個專題涉及的辭彙並非五篇文章所能涵蓋，所以本書還特別編寫了專題分類辭彙學習手冊，把與每個專題密切相關的辭彙以英漢對照的方式列出，做成口袋書隨書附贈，便於考生隨身攜帶，隨時隨地查閱、記憶。
