艾倫·查爾頓（AlanCharlton，1948—）英國當代著名極簡主義藝術家。他的灰色繪畫自60年代末以來延續一貫的邏輯理念和哲學，摒棄繪畫的內在構圖、色彩、以及"技巧的複雜性"，開創性的在繪畫中僅使用灰色作為主色調，以獨立圖形或矩陣來傳達情感，以外圍橫木的寬度為基準確定展示內容的比例和尺寸，風格抽象，繪畫即過程。

人物簡介

艾倫·查爾頓，1948生於謝菲爾德，英國。1965-66年就讀於謝菲爾德藝術學院；1966-69年就讀於坎伯韋爾藝術學院；1972年畢業於皇家藝術學院。在倫敦生活和工作；妻子LesleyFoxcroft也是英國著名雕塑家。
60年代末至70年代初，艾倫·查爾頓開始決定使用不同色調灰色作為其繪畫的標誌性顏色，此舉轟動一時，而灰色也成為其個人的創作準則堅持沿用至今。童年在工業城市謝菲爾德的經歷也是他畫風形成的原因之一。
從1972年起至今，他多次參加歐洲各國及亞洲的藝術展覽，作品被多家畫廊和個人收藏。其作品是英國極簡主義繪畫的重要代表之一。

從60年代末起至今，艾倫·查爾頓一直堅持著他繪畫的基本法則—只使用不同色調的灰色作畫。起初，查爾頓選擇灰色是看重它平實穩定的特性和工業感。這種顏色讓觀眾關注由畫面形式本身帶來的體驗，而不會產生太多超出畫面含義的個人化的情緒。然而查爾頓很快的發現了灰色的多變之處，因此這一風格的繪畫也變得比預期的更加富有表現力。查爾頓對物質性，均勻性和空間整體性的深厚探索使得他的畫與單調和無聊完全無緣。
在查爾頓的畫中，畫的表面總是如天鵝絨般平整無暇，輕柔整齊的筆觸強調出畫布本身的質感，精巧的反映光線的變化。而重複的圖形將他所創造的這種平靜的表面分割開來，統一而具有節奏感。在分割圖案時，不論是什麼形狀，查爾頓總是使用4.5厘米作為度量的標準：畫的厚度總是4.5厘米，而其他尺寸也都是4.5的倍數。這種規則也是畫面的吸引力和均勻度的另一個來源。
除了遵循參數和色彩上的概念基礎，查爾頓相信自己的畫作需要對展覽的實際空間保持誠意。他嘗試多種方式把自己的作品和展覽的實際空間創造出關聯關係和相互作用，例如他的狹槽系列，洞系列，線系列，通道系列，以及外輪廓系列。這種獨特而隨意的關係是只有在他的畫實際安裝之後才會產生的。在展覽時，查爾頓不會給出觀眾明確的畫作含義。當觀眾根據不同的視角來探索他的作品時，看似安靜的作品發展出一種無法預計的旋律感。他的畫作改變了觀眾與周圍環境的關係，突出了畫與畫之間的空間，讓觀眾除了看他的畫作本身，也思考畫作之間和之外的空間。
查爾頓的畫是開創性的，也是很多當代藝術家的靈感來源。他持續不絕的誠意，堅持不懈的完整性和對簡單概念的不斷探索正是藝術家們學習的方向。他的畫冷艷中帶著戲劇化，經得起細緻的推敲。而對於自己，查爾頓只是真誠而簡單的評價說：“我是一個畫灰色畫的藝術家。”
