《英語辭彙教與學》的閱讀對象是將英語作為第二語言或外語的英語教師。《英語辭彙教與學》的主旨是把英語辭彙的教學系統化、理論化,為英語辭彙的教學提供理論依據和實踐指導。《英語辭彙教與學》的指導思想是:作者相信對辭彙發展系統化和理論化的研究可以最終促進辭彙的教學。書中參照和選用了過去一百年間語言教師和研究者所取得的理論研究成果、進行的實驗探索和課堂教學實踐。
對於我國目前的英語教學實際來說,該書的出版是非常有意義的。辭彙學習的重要性不言而喻,它貫穿了整個語言學習的過程。一定的辭彙量是順利進行聽、說、讀、寫、譯等語言交流的基礎。目前,以大學英語教學為例,絕大部分辭彙教學被包含在各門基礎英語課的教學過程當中。例如,在閱讀課、聽力課或口語課上對生詞的解釋。其內容大多為使用生詞表對該詞的音、形、義等方面進行講解。教學過程中普遍存在的問題有:一方面,許多教師缺乏對於辭彙教學理論和相關的科學測試方式的了解以及對學生學習策略的研究,從而不能科學地幫助學生更有效地學習。另一方面,學生為了過級考試而片面追求純粹的辭彙量的增長,錯誤地認為只要辭彙達到了具體的數量要求,英語水平就會提高,考試成績也會相應地提高。他們缺少對於辭彙劃分知識的了解,不知道對於出現頻率不同的詞需要不同的學習策略,其後果就是時間花費多而學習成效小。同時,學生們片面地認為辭彙的學習只是記住單詞的中文意思,而不了解詞義學習所包含的豐富內容。
《英語辭彙教與學》針對英語辭彙教學過程中遇到的具有普遍性的問題,在理論分析的基礎上通過具體的舉例說明,一一做出解答。《英語辭彙教與學》雖然理論性強,但語言清晰易懂,並附有內容豐富的實際操作指導,讓英語教師在學習理論時並不覺得枯燥。
