物種概述
紐扣珊瑚群是一類六放蟲（Zoanthid），它們是珊瑚和海葵的親戚，附著在淺海的岩石或珊瑚礁上。紐扣珊瑚的色彩可算是最千變萬化的——紅、橙、黃、綠、青、藍、紫，幾乎什麼顏色都有。它們像一朵朵鮮花緊緊地生活在一起，在珊瑚礁上形成一片片五彩斑斕的“花海”。
然而，某些品種的紐扣珊瑚會分泌一種劇毒物質——海葵毒素（水螅毒素）。這種毒素是自然界的第二毒物。1克海葵毒素可以殺死30萬隻小鼠和80個人。這種毒素可以透過人的皮膚，還會隨著溫度的變化變成氣體，只要很少的量就可能致命，07年，一名美國男子用沸水法清理自家的魚缸，不小心吸入升騰的海葵毒素，雖然最後搶救過來，但是仍然留下哮喘的終生疾病。養有紐扣珊瑚的朋友，不管它是否有毒，一定要在接觸之後迅速洗手。某些水族館中也可能會出售有毒的紐扣珊瑚，如果你不懂，千萬不要隨便嘗試養。
水螅毒素
概述
眾所周知珊瑚作為刺胞動物，或多或少都是有毒的。但在水箱裡飼養的種類中最危險的當屬紐扣珊瑚。水螅毒素（Palytoxin）（也稱砂岩海葵毒素）是目前自然界已知的毒性最強的物質之一，對大鼠致死量不到1微克/千克（毒性在不同動物間致死量有不同），對人類的致死量約在2.3微克到45微克之間。有不少人已將因為處理紐扣珊瑚不當而中招。這種毒素主要存在於一些海葵、軟珊瑚、紐扣珊瑚和水螅之中，是由於某種可能是共生的細菌產生的。它的毒性機理是干擾鈉鉀離子通道，因為鈉鉀離子通道所有細胞基本都有（而且都非常重要），所以它可以影響身體中的幾乎每種細胞，所以對於各種暴露途徑，症狀可能會非常不同，主要症狀有呼吸困難、肌肉疼痛，或者發熱，而且這種症狀會持續很多天。症狀的發作很快，死的也很快。
一般來說對於人有幾種中毒途徑：
1、吃受污染的魚或甲殼類動物產品。
2、吸入含有水螅毒素的蒸氣。
3、眼睛或皮膚接觸含有水螅毒素的海葵、珊瑚及其分泌物或受污染的海水。
目前已知這種毒素存在於Palythoa屬的紐扣中，彩虹紐扣通常（注意，是通常，有很多特例）屬於Zoanthus屬，Z屬的紐扣目前尚未有劇毒報導。
傳說
夏威夷島上的島民說，毛伊島上的一個村子被詛咒了。當年村民們藐視鯊魚神靈，於是被鯊魚吃掉。活著的村民將鯊魚捕殺並肢解焚燒，隨後將焚燒後的灰燼倒入哈納鎮附近的一個湖中。不久後，一種神秘的海藻在湖中生長。這種海藻被稱為“致命的哈納海藻”（limu-make-o-hana）。如果誰不小心把魚叉放入這個湖中，然後刺傷人，很快這個人就會被奪去生命。
鯊魚神靈也許是一個精心編撰的傳說故事，到了1961年，菲利普·海爾弗里奇和約翰·舒佩發現了這個傳說中的湖泊。在這他們發現了一種新的六放蟲，命名為毒性沙海葵（ Palythoa toxica ）。limu-make-o-Hana 是真的存在，只是並不是一種海藻，而是一種群居的六放蟲。
