身為一個曾經多次採訪布蘭妮的記者，我已經忘記有多少次，某些八卦電視節目要我去爆料關於布蘭妮的隱私。對於她的任何芝麻大小的事，媒體都有極大的興趣。例如她在音樂錄像帶中穿過的性感暴露的衣服，還有她的前男友是誰，她現在又跟誰談戀愛，或是她現在跟哪個八卦報紙的記者過不去之類的問題。但是，大家最有興趣的話題，還是：布蘭妮是不是太過火了呢？其實這個問題本身是沒有意義的，因為自古以來，身為一個超級巨星，就是要具有話題、具有娛樂性、再來就是具有高度的爭議性，這個原則自古到今都是一樣。從披頭四到瑪丹娜、從貓王到麥可傑克森，這個道理在演藝圈是亘古不變的。但是其實真正比較有趣的問題，應該是說到底布蘭妮有什麼神奇的魅力，可以創造出人們這么大的想像空間？為什麼這一個來自路易西安那州的坎特伍德小鎮的小女生，可以成為一個世人投射欲望、幻想以及愛戀的超級發光體？故事要從1998年說起，當年布蘭妮「愛的初告白...Baby One More Time」這支音樂錄像帶造成全球立即的轟動及影響，帶領起一股青少年的流行風潮。在《愛的初告白...Baby One More Time》專輯封面，布蘭妮跪在粉紅色的背景前，帶著她充滿天真甜美的笑容擺出迷人的姿態，那時的她，看起來便是一副初生之犢不畏虎的樣勢。不過，這個形象跟她在音樂錄像帶中，將學校制服襯衫綁在腰上，一副超有自信的小女人模樣，實在不太一樣。從來沒有一個明星的肚臍，能像她造成如此大的騷動及引起世人如此劇烈的反應及討論，而現在，只要有小女孩露出自己的肚臍，但卻紅著臉、一副超級保守書呆子的樣子，那你就知道應該要怪罪布蘭妮了！但是，布蘭妮本人，卻說這一切沒有那么複雜深奧。那些騷動及討論，帶來的其實是廣大的歡迎及迴響。「愛的初告白...Baby One More Time」這支單曲迅速獲得冠軍，而同名專輯在發行後六周，便已銷售超過一百萬張。接下來推出的單曲「有時候Sometimes」以及「（你讓我）神魂顛倒(You Drive Me) Crazy」依然表現銳利，讓布蘭妮的處女作，在排行榜上停留了超過103周的驚人時間。
在首張專輯還沒退燒之際，2000年布蘭妮又推出新作《愛的再告白Oops!...I Did It Again》。這張專輯製作人，麥克斯馬汀Max Martin為布蘭妮量身訂作的首支單曲，與先前的代表作「愛的初告白...Baby One More Time」非常神似，完全延續她的音樂風格。布蘭妮嘟起小嘴，唱著I think I did it again！布蘭妮的少女宣言，強烈而清楚，讓大家無法忘懷。布蘭妮又成功了一次！不同於「愛的初告白...Baby One More Time」，這支新的冠軍單曲「愛的再告白Oops!...I Did It Again」充滿頑皮淘氣的感覺及挑逗煽情的味道，還帶有一些倔強，布蘭妮唱著：「糟糕…你以為我愛上了你 / 以為我是天上掉下來的禮物 / 但我沒那么天真 Oops!...You think I'm in love / That I'm sent from above / I'm not that innocent)」。如果布蘭妮的首張專輯，暗示我們她還有更多我們並不了解的面向，那第二張專輯《愛的再告白Oops!...I Did It Again》對於這項訊息的傳達，便是再清楚不過了！在這支音樂錄像帶中段，有一個暗戀布蘭妮的男生，給了她一條神似鐵達尼號之中海洋之星的紅寶石項鍊。布蘭妮嘲弄的問了她的小跟班：「我以為那個老太太把項鍊丟到海里去了呢？」，他回答說：「寶貝，這是我跳到海里去撿回來給你的。」在這支歌曲中，她穿著紅色的緊身衣，展現出她強烈的掌控欲及她堅定的女人主張。
然而「幸運Lucky」，是另一首可以傳達布蘭妮內心的單曲。一個年輕的超級巨星，在她成功的背後，卻有許多不為人知的悲傷。伴隨她的全球成功佳績，接踵而來的卻是一波波令人無法閃躲、無處可逃的巨大壓力。在這首歌曲中，她唱著：世界不停地轉，她不斷贏得目光焦點/但誰能告訴我這一切都停止後該怎么辦？這歌詞不太像是她自己的心聲，卻比較像是一種深層的憂慮。在「更堅強Stronger」這首歌曲中，她的敏感情緒更加明顯的展露出來，延續在「愛的初告白...Baby One More Time」中的意涵，她唱著：「寂寞再也不能影響我 / 我已經更堅強 My loneliness ain't killing me no more. I'm stronger than yesterday.」！
布蘭妮一直以來都讓不同的詞曲創作者為她操刀，直到第三張專輯《布蘭妮Britney》，她自己嘗試參與了創作，她曾經在《愛的再告白Oops!...I Did It Again》專輯中，寫了一首告白式的情歌〈Dear Diary〉，但是隨著年齡的成長，她在音樂上的品味蛻變得更加獨特。同時，她對自己聲音的感覺更加敏銳，她也嘗試學習彈吉他，並在閒暇之餘，開始歌詞的創作。在專輯中，最明顯可以探查出她心情的作品，便是「過度保護overprotected」及「少女已過，熟女未滿I'm Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman」這兩首。那時的她，還未滿20歲，正在努力蛻變為成人的階段，布蘭妮表示：我必須經由一些錯誤，來學習了解我自己。於是她的方法便是，她大聲高唱著：我不要成為溫室之中不解世事的花朵…！
布蘭妮也首度完成了她的電影處女作《Crossroads》。這部電影是描述三個青梅竹馬的女孩一起同行，開啟了一段橫跨美國各洲的旅程，在旅途上，發現好友們一些不為人知內心秘密的故事。這部電影敘述的故事，跟當時布蘭妮內心的世界、及她所深思的議題，其實有很大的不同。當時的布蘭妮，即將要推出她的第三張個人專輯，同時她極力的想要擺脫青少女的青澀，但是面對接踵而來的各種挑戰及考驗，在踏出她的腳步之前，她又必須要先找到自己的定位，知道自己到底是誰，想要的又是什麼？
這個蛻變的歷程，必須從她歌聲唱腔的改變做起。從當初簡單的泡泡糖流行音樂，逐漸轉變成一種比較隱晦、舞曲曲風的鏇律及節奏。在當時的音樂環境而言，「愛情奴隸I'm A Slave 4 U」這首歌，可以說是布蘭妮所有發行歌曲中，最不像布蘭妮的作品。曲中濃濃的中東風味、及令人難以抗拒的節奏感，對於布蘭妮之後的作品，造成了極大的影響力。「愛情奴隸I'm A Slave 4 U」由查德雨果及法瑞兒威廉斯共同製作，非常誘人、又具有濃的化不開的異國風情。在這支音樂錄像帶中，布蘭妮與舞者們，在香汗淋漓中不停起舞。布蘭妮解釋說，這首歌要表達的其實是她作為音樂節奏及舞蹈的奴隸。當然，這也可以解釋成是布蘭妮直接而單純的性感魅力表現。布蘭妮首度在MTV音樂錄像帶大獎的頒獎典禮上表演這首歌曲時，在舞台上，布蘭妮被一隻巨型蟒蛇纏繞著全身，許多她身邊的人，都不斷的告訴布蘭妮，這個表演太危險了，但是其實這首歌的歌詞，也說明了她想要單挑這項演出的心情：「你們所有的人都看著，以為我還是一個小女孩，你們有沒有想過，我已經可以向世界跨出我的一大步!All you people look at me like I'm a little girl / Well did you ever think it would be okay for me to step into this world.」
2002年，布蘭妮再度回到錄音室，灌錄了第四張專輯《流行禁區In The Zone》，參與的製作人包括了魔比Moby、超害羞以及前衛組Bloodshy & Avant、蓋西格沃司Guy Sigsworth、紅色禁區RedZone及駭客組The Matrix等重量級製作人。這個強勢的製作組合，為布蘭妮量身打造了「中你的毒Toxic」、「嗆音樂Me Against The Music」及「肆無忌憚Outrageous」等暢銷單曲。音樂上展現了全新的面貌，也更展現了布蘭妮超級性感的魅力。這張《流行禁區In The Zone》充滿了舞曲曲風、嘻哈風味、以及未來感。在「中你的毒Toxic」中，布蘭妮的造型，就像是007電影的龐德女郎一樣，更多加了日本風味。而接下來的單曲「每一次Everytime」，及勞凱利R.kelly為布蘭妮親手打造的性感單曲「肆無忌憚Outrageous」，則展現了完全不同的音樂風情。這首歌曲，清楚的彰顯了布蘭妮令人詫異的個人特質。然而，在「每一次Everytime」這首歌曲中，布蘭妮深情款款的唱出了她對過往情人揮之不去的想念。
