Arizonahasalongandrichbasketballhistory.TheprogramcametonationalprominenceunderthetutelageofformerheadcoachluteOlson,whosince1983hasestablishedtheprogramasamongAmerica'seliteincollegebasketball.OnewriterreferredtoUAas"PointGuardU",theschoolhasproducedspectacularguardsandNBAplayerslikeSeanElliott,SteveKerr,KhalidReeves,DamonStoudamire,MikeBibby,JasonTerry,RichardJefferson,GilbertArenas,andJerrydBayless.11NBAChampionshipshavebeenwonbywildcatsplayers.SincetheNBAdraftwasshortenedtotwoRoundsin1989,Arizonaleadsthenationwith31selectionsinthatspan.ThisnumbergrewwhenJordanHillandChaseBudingerwereselectedinthe2009NBADraft.
From1985to2009,theArizonabasketballteamreachedtheNCAATournamentfor25consecutiveyears,twoyearsshyofNorthCarolina'srecordof27.Despitea1999appearancelatervacatedbytheNCAA,themediastillcitesArizona'sstreak,andsimplynotethechange.TheWildcatshavereachedtheFinalFouroftheNCAATournamentonfouroccasions(1988,1994,1997,and2001).In1997,ArizonadefeatedtheUniversityofKentucky,thedefendingnationalchampions,towintheNCAANationalChampionship.InPac-10play,formerheadcoachLuteOlsoncurrentlyholdstherecordformostwinsasaPac-10coachat327.Inaddition,theteamhaswon11Pac-10regularseasontitlesand4Pac-10tournamenttitles.Arizonaalsoholdsthedistinctionofrecording5outofthe717–1Pac-10seasons(one-lossseasons).NoteamhasgoneundefeatedsincetheformationofthePac-10.Arizonahasspent110weeksinthetop10whichis8thall-time.

UniversityofArizonafieldeditsfirstmen'sbasketballteamin1904–05.OrinAlbertCatescoachedtheteamanddrewopponentsfromlocalYMCAs.ThefirstgameArizonaplayedendedina40–32victoryovertheMorenciYMCA.
In1914,Arizona'sfirstfamouscoach,JamesFred"Pop"McKalewasluredawayfromateachingandcoachingjobatTucsonHighSchooltotakeoverasAthleticDirectorandcoachbasketball,football,baseballandtrack.McKaletookthingstoanewlevel,postinga9–0recordhisfirstseasonasabasketballcoach.moreover,McKaleelevatedtheprogramtointercollegiateplay.WhilebasketballwashisleastfavoriteofthemanysportshecoachedwhileatUA,Hechalkedupthreeundefeatedseasonsandacareer-winningaverageof.803,whichhasneverbeenbestedbyaUAcoachwhohasheldthepostforatleastthreeyears.TheMcKaleMemorialCenter,themainarenaforArizonabasketball,isnamedinhishonor.
From1925to1961,theprogramwasunderthestewardshipofFredEnke,UA'slongesttenuredcoach.CoachFredA.EnkewasresponsiblefortheearlysuccessesofWildcatbasketball.Enkeamassed509winsinhistenureontheUAsidelinesandstillranksasthesecond-winningestcoachinschoolhistory,winningmorethan60percentofhisgames.EnkealsoledtheCatstothefirstfourpostseasonappearances(3N.I.T./1NCAA)inschoolhistoryandin1950-51competedinboththeN.I.T.andNCAApostseasontournaments.Finally,hewasthefirstcoachtoleadArizonatoanationalranking.Twoofhisteams(1950,1951)finishedtheseasonrankedinthetop15.
UnderEnke,UAcompetedinthenowdefunctBorderConference.UnderEnke'sdirection,Arizonawon12conferencechampionships,includingaspaninwhichtheCatswonorsharedsevenconsecutiveBorderConferencetitles(1942–51).NoBorderConferenceteamwonasmanyleaguegames(231)oroverallcontests(398)duringitsmembership.In1962,ArizonajoinedtheWesternAthleticConferenceasafoundingmemberaftertheBorderConferencedisbanded.
In1972,FredSNOWDENwashiredastheheadbasketballcoach,makingArizonathesecondDivisionIschoolandthefirstmajorprogramtohireanAfricanAmericanheadcoach.Knownas"TheFox,"SnowdenbroughttheexcitementbacktoWildcatbasketballduringhis10yearsontheArizonasideline,averagingmorethan80pointspergameinsixofhis10yearsandtoppingthe100-pointbarrier27times.SnowdenledArizonatotheNCAAtournamenttwice,in1976and1977,gettingasfarastheEliteEightin1976beforelosingtoUCLA82–66,agameafterdefeatingUNLVinaSweetSixteenmatchup.Duringthe1976tournamenthealsologgedArizona'sfirstandonlytournamentwinsuntilLuteOlson'shiring,beatingJohnThompson'sGeorgetownteam83–76.Snowden's1976teamalsowontheschool'sonlyWACchampionshiptitleonabuzzer-beaterbyGilbertMylesversesNewMexico,withthehelpofthespectacularplayofBobElliott,JimRappis,andAlFleming.In1978,CoachSnowdenhelpedtransitionthebasketballprogramovertothenewlyformedPac-10.SnowdencouldnotsustainsuccessinthePac-10,however,finishingnohigherthan4thplaceintheconference.His9–18finalseasonledUAtolookforareplacement.
AthleticDirectorDaveStrackbroughtinBenLindseytoreplaceFredSnowdenin1983,andonthesurface,itseemedlikeareasonablemove.Lindseyhadjuniorcollegeexpertise,havinghadasuccessfulcareeratGrandCanyonUniversity,wherehewontwonationaltitles.Whatresulted,however,wasnothingshortofdisaster.The1983teamwent4–24,withonlyonePac-10win.

Comingoffapreviousseasonrecordof4–24withonlyasinglePac-10win,UAAthleticdirectorCedricDempseyhiredLuteOlsonfromtheUniversityofIowatotakeovertheprogram.UAneededacoachwithahistoryofquicklyturningaroundprograms,whichOlsonhaddonepreviouslyatIowa.“Iknewwehadatremendousamountofworktodo,”OlsonrecalledinarecentinterviewwithTucsonLifestyle.“Theprogramwasinshamblesatthatpoint,aftertheterribleyearbefore..."
UnderOlson,Arizonaquicklyrosetonationalprominence.ArizonawonitsfirstPac-10titlein1986,onlythreeyearsafterhisarrival.Thatseasonsetupanamazing1987–88season,whichincludedtakingtheGreatAlaskaShootoutchampionship,theValleyBankFiestaBowlClassicchampionshipandthePac-10championship.UnderplayersSteveKerr,KennyLoftonandSeanElliott,Arizonaspentmuchoftheseasonranked#1andmadetheirfirst(andOlson'ssecond)FinalFour.WhileArizonalostintheFinalFourround,theirplayputtheprogramonthemapandlaunchedArizona'sreignasaperennialPac-10andNCAAtournamentcontender.
In1997,ArizonadefeatedtheUniversityofKentucky,thedefendingnationalchampions,towintheNCAANationalChampionship.Priortowinningthechampionshipin1997,Arizonastormedbackfrom10-pointdeficitsintheSoutheastRegionalFirstRoundandSecondRoundagainst#13SouthAlabamaand#12CollegeofCharleston,respectivelywinning65–57and73–69.TheSoutheastRegionalsemifinalpittedagainstoverall#1Kansas(34–1)whichhaddefeatedArizonatheyearbeforeinthe1996WestRegionalSemifinal.However,ArizonacameoutfastandstunnedtheJayhawks85–82,thenprevailedinovertimeagainstProvidence96–92intheEliteEighttoclinchaberthintheFinalFour.Arizonathenbeat#1seedNorthCarolina66–58intheFinalFour,whichturnedouttobeDeanSmith'slastgameasacoach.Arizonaalsoaccomplishedtheunprecedentedfeatofbeatingthreenumberoneseedsinthesametournament.
TheyearfollowingtheChampionshipseason,1998,Arizonareturnedall5starters(MikeBibby,MichaelDickerson,MilesSimon,BennettDavison,andAJBramlett)andwerepoisedtomakeanotherrunafterreceivingthe#1overallseedintheWest,butwereupsetbyUtahintheElite8.
In1999,all5starterswerelosttograduationorearlyentrytotheNBAdraftandArizona'shopesofcontinuingitsstreakofconsecutivestriptotheNCAAtournamentwasinjeopardyuntilseniorpointguardJasonTerry(the6thmantheprevioustwoseasons)elevatedhisgame(receivingNationalPlayeroftheYearhonors)andcontinuedtheschool'samazingstreak.
2001wasoneofthemostchallengingandrewardingyearsfortheprogram.LuteOlson’swifeBobbi,wellknowntoplayersandfansalikeasasteadfastpresenceonthesidelines,lostherbattlewithcancer.Theteam,whichhadbeenapreseasonpickbymanytowinthenationaltitlehadtoplaywithoutOlsonforthreeweekswhileOlsonwasonbereavementleave.TheCatsvowedtodedicatetheirseasontoBobbi.WithguardJasonGardner,centerLorenWoodsandforwardMichaelWright—eachanAll-American—leadingtheway,theCatstrouncedtheiropponents,beatingOregon104–65,devastatingUSC105–61,andchargingthroughtheFinalFour.TheytookdownEasternIllinois,Butler,Mississippi,Illinois,andMichiganState,onlytobestoppedbyDukeinthetitlegame.
InhislateryearsatUA,Olsonfieldedcompetitiveteamswithextremelytalentedpointguards.Continuingthereputationandnickname"PointGuardU",recentstandoutsincludedJasonGardner,SalimStoudamire,MustafaShakur,JerrydBaylessandNicWise.ArizonawontheirmostrecentPac-10titleduringthe2004–2005seasonunderthespectacularplayofseniorsSalimStoudamireandcenterChanningFrye,ThatteamalsomadeittotheElite8andthevergeofthefinalfourbeforeblowinga15pointleadwithfourminutestoplayandlosinginovertime,90–89,toNumber1SeedandeventualNationalRunner-upUniversityofIllinois.
Olsontookanunexplainedleaveofabsenceatthebeginningofthe2007–2008season.AssistantcoachKevinO'NeilltookoverinterimheadcoachingdutiesfortheArizonaWildcats.Atthattime,Olsonannouncedthatheintendedtobebackforthe2008–09seasonandfinishouthiscontract,whichwasscheduledtoendin2011.Hisdeparturewascriticizedbysomemembersofthemedia.TheyalsoquestionedhowheandtheUAathleticdepartmenthandledhisreturnandtheverbalsuccessionagreementwithcoachO'Neill.However,onOctober23,2008,heunexpectedlyannouncedhisretirementfromtheprogram(bywayofanannouncementfromArizonaathleticdirectorJimLivengood).Afewdayslater,Olson'spersonalphysicianheldapressconferenceandexplainedthattheretirementwasstronglyadvisedduetohealthconcerns.

AfterLuteOlson'sabruptretirement,ArizonaAthleticDirectorJimLivengoodappointedassistantcoachRussPennellastheinterimheadcoachforthe2008–2009season23daysbeforethestartoftheseason.TheappointmentcameafterMikeDunlap,theassociateheadcoachbroughtintoreplaceKevinO'Neill,turneddownthejob.UnderPennell,theCatsfinished19-13intheregularseason,includinganon-conferencewinoverKansasanda7-gamewinstreakwithwinsoverUCLAandWashington.Despitea19–13finishtotheseason,Arizonawascontroversiallyselectedasoneofthelastteamsintothefieldof65asa12thseedintheMidwestregion,extendingitsNCAAconsecutivetournamentappearancesto25years.TheCatsmadeittotheSweet16(regionalsemi-finals)withwinsover5-seedUtahand13-seedClevelandState,beforefallingtooverall1-seed,Louisville.DespitePennell'spost-seasonsuccess,hewasnotretained,asArizonaannouncedbeforehishiringtheywouldholdanationalcoachingsearchaftertheseasonended.(OnApril9,2009,Pennellwashiredasheadcoachofthemen'sbasketballteamatDivisionIIGrandCanyonUniversity,amemberofthePacificWestConference.)
Aftertheendoftheseason,variouscoachingnameswereconsideredtosucceedLuteOlsononapermanentbasis.ArizonacontactedGonzaga'sMarkFew,Pittsburgh'sJamieDixonandthen-MemphiscoachJohnCalipari(beforeheacceptedthevacantpositionatKentucky)totakethejob.ArizonaevenbroughtUSC'sTimFloydoncampusforaninterviewandmadeanoffer,whichheultimatelyturneddown.

ArizonahiredSeanMillerfromXavierUniversitytofilltheheadcoachingposition.Millerwasformallyintroducedasthe13thheadmen'sbasketballcoachatArizonaatapressconferenceonApril7,2009atMcKaleCenter.Atthepressconference,MilleracknowledgedLuteOlson'simpactontheArizonaprogram,byaddressingOlsonpersonally:"...oneofthereasonsIsitheretodayisbecauseofthegreatlegacyyoubuilt."MilleralsopromisedUofAfansthattheywouldenjoythestyleofbothoffenseanddefensehewouldbringtoWildcatbasketball.Miller'ssalaryis$1.6millionperyear;hewillreceiveanadditional$400,000perseasonfromNikeandmediacontractsduringafive-yeardeal,aswellasa$1millionsigningbonusandotheramenitiessuchasseasonticketstootherWildcatsportingeventsandtheuseofaprivatejet.Withinthreemonthsofjoiningtheprogram,Millercompiledastrongfive-playerrecruitingclasswhichranked13thnationallyin2009.
