As to keep talents, company should design appropriate job to fit every one in it and don’t give too much pressure on them. Furthermore, what the company should take into account is leave some adequate private time to its employees. And the author illustrates why and how companies should do that through the sixth paragraph.
But when I started to read this paragraph, the author “raises” some problems to me. firstly, the phrase “on and off job” stopped me. In the dictionary, the “on and off” means “now and then”, but I didn’t think so. In the online dictionary, I can’t find the meaning of it. But from one of the meanings of “on” (“used to show that a condition or process is being experienced”), I guess they mean “go to work and go off work and back home”. Secondly, when I first read this paragraph, I found that the first sentence has two subjects while the author uses “is” next to them. Fortunately, there is a comma between “on and off job” and “is more important…” It can be inferred from that the subject of this sentence is “quality of life”.
Then the author says: “Quality of life is the most important to today’s worker than even before.” From there [this] , I can imagine most of workers didn’t pay more attention to their quality of their [delete their]life before and what they considered most was have a sustainable job to support them and their family [families]. In fact, they didn’t have “the quality of life” in their mind. To work hard was their first mission of survive. So the author uses “struggle” to demonstrate today’s workers, both men and women, try their best to change their situation and gain some rights they deserved. Thus companies which are humanizing should be sensitive to personal needs of their employees and respond to them as soon as possible. If do that, there must be a stable and motivated employees.
The author mentions the trend which many workers also expect to. Nowadays, the society is a competitive and changeable one. No One Knows what will happen tomorrow. So many sensible workers want to improve themselves during the procession of seek position somewhere else. Knowledge is the only one that is never obsolete. Maybe that is “the meaning in work” and “balance of life” (mentioned in the Paragraph 6) which the author remark [remarks] in the Paragraph two [the second paragraph]. But in this paragraph, a sentence confused me. It is “They also expect ongoing job training that makes them marketable both inside and outside the company” why the author uses “marketable”? What the “market” modifies? They are not goods. Then I got the meaning: “Marketable products or skills are easy to sell because a lot of people want them”. So I know workers want to be an important person in each company they work in. They hope they are knowledgeable and shifted works give them chances to renew themselves and plenty of working experiences.
