This part of passage gives us six types of ads. About the weasel claim, in my opinion, it formed by a careful choice of words. It used “fights” not “stop”, “many” not “all”. I found an ad on internet that came from the product of lining. In those ads, the slogan is “faster” not “the fastest”. It gives us a good impression with their products. We would consider their products were better than others. That is the use of ads. Stephen Leacock said: Advertising may not be described as the science of arresting human intelligence long enough to get money from it. It means the ads control the people’s pausing behavior, and the seller get money from people through the ads. About the water is wet claim, it just told the truth of their product, the deficiency with other products. It makes the customers to compare it with another one. The SO WHAT claim emphases the more focus that their products have, but they do not give us the result of having the more focus. None of us know the benefits or harm for us, it needs to be considered. As is known to all, with the growing influence of mass media, advertising invades every aspect of our lives. Whenever we turn on the TV, look through a newspaper, open the mailbox, or Surf on the Internet, advertisements would immediately jump into our sight. With the development of material prosperity, advertisements have become more and more important in our daily life. But there are also some opinions against advertising. Some people think that advertisements do not give much information but only try to persuade you to buy. They create a demand for goods that are not really needed. Besides, advertising adds to the cost of goods. Further more, they are ugly to look at and spoil the environments. Actually, every coin has two sides. Advertisingis without exception. But in today's world, advertising is not only necessary but also helpful. The poor old consumer! He'd have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertise merits, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities. We must not forget, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programs is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Another thing we mustn't forget is the” small ads. "Which are in virtually every newspaper and magazine? What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It's the best advertisement for advertising there is!
