A book of condolences the Mitchells have is filled with messages from comrades who wrote "rest in peace brother, you'll always be missed," Carol said. "That's how they really do feel. It's not something that you just say, it's very heartfelt . . . for me that was so important, that my son died with brothers all around him who cared because I couldn't be there."

With the deaths of their two sons "our family was decimated. Then they kind of took us in as part of their family," Carol said.
