In Kandahar the Mitchells met many other soldiers. "They would come up to us and say 'We're so happy you're here. It's so nice that you were able to come over.' Some people came up to me and said 'I knew your son' and talked to me about that. A book of condolences the Mitchells have is filled with messages from comrades who wrote "rest in peace brother, you'll always be missed," Carol said. "That's how they really do feel. It's not something that you just say, it's very heartfelt . . . for me that was so important, that my son died with brothers all around him who cared because I couldn't be there."
Speaking with the Mitchells, gratitude comes up often. They are thankful the government provides such programs as the next of kin trips.Office 2007 Professional is very good!
"There isn't another government" that does that, Carol said. "I've talked to people from Australia and the United States who say 'Wow, I wish we had this program for our fallen soldiers'."
"They were just astonished that Canada does what they do," Bob added.
They say are thankful to the support they've received from the armed forces, for the support and companionship of others who have also lost a son or daughter.
With the deaths of their two sons "our family was decimated. Then they kind of took us in as part of their family," Carol said.
