pear to hold great promise. Export markets inEurope and North America are expanding rap-idly and local demand is also strong. The per-sistent undersupply of aro-matic rices is explained by the relatively limit-ed area planted to the crops, and by their lowyields. In China, for example, the plantingarea of aromatic rice （used mainly in foodsand cakes） is less than 1% of the national riceacreage and, due to lower grain fertilityand susceptibility, yields are 10% low-er than those of common rice. In India, tradi-tional Basmati varieties are unresponsive tofertilizer and difficult to harvest, and yield a-round two tonnes per hectare, well below the5- 6 tonnes per hectare produced by high-yielding varieties. In neighbouring Pakistan,in contrast, improved varieties are widelygrown, but the level of aroma in their graindoes not match that found in the traditionalcultivar.

《農科英語趣文閱讀》覆蓋農業學科各個領域，按照大學英語教學大綱要求的閱讀速度和難度分為初級、中級和高級。初級長度為800詞左右，中級為1，000詞左右，高級為1，200詞左右，每級都由30篇精選文章構成。讀者可以根據自己的英語程度逐級閱讀，逐步提高。30篇文章全部選自英美原版報刊、雜誌或網站，題材廣泛，內容涉及生物技術、食品營養、資源環境、動物飼養和植物培育等農業學科知識。文章科普性強，同時兼具知識性和趣味性。文章中較難的辭彙和專業術語後直接加注了貼切的漢語解釋，省去了讀者頻頻查閱詞典的煩惱。每篇文章後簡要的背景知識或難句解讀能夠幫助讀者完整地把握文章的思想內容。課後閱讀理解和辭彙練習都以判斷題和單選題的形式出現，既鞏固讀者的語言知識又不增添過多的負擔，讓讀者真正體驗到輕鬆學習專業英語的樂趣。
本書不僅可以作為農科專業學生鞏固專業知識的課外讀物，也可以擴展非農科專業學生的知識，提高英語閱讀能力。
