長期以來,評論界對英國首位諾貝爾文學獎得主魯德亞德·吉卜林在英國文學史上的地位及其作品的價值一直有爭議。但隨著時間的推移和20世紀後期後殖民主義理論的興起,吉卜林作品的價值逐漸為人們所肯定。本書從後殖民主義視角出發,對吉卜林的主要作品即他的印度題材小說進行了系統的研究。作者根據吉卜林印度題材小說的創作過程和特色,將其分為三個時期,認為儘管這些作品中都表現出一種帝國主義態度和身份危機,但它們還是經歷了一種意識形態的變化。簡而言之,他的前期印度題材小說中帝國主義傾向比較明顯,而其後期印度題材小說則更多地表明他對印度的熱愛及其東西方融合的觀念。
本書為國內首部系統研究魯德亞德·吉卜林作品的專著,是2005年度國家社科基金項目“魯德亞德·吉卜林研究”(05CWW006)的階段性成果。
