Geologic Journey: The Great Lakes tells the story
洛基山 (2 of 5)
Geologic Journey: The Rockies tells the story of the greatspine of stone that runs from the Canadian North to the southern United States. As the camera takes the audience on a highwire tour through the peaks of the Rockies - in both Canada and the USA - craggy rock faces and dangerous ice reveal the growth pangs of the mountain building era. The pristine beauty of the Canadian Rockies gives way to the ghost towns and gold mines that litter the mountains in Colorado - a telltale clue to the different geologic forces at work in the Canadian range and their American cousins.
This episode is an illustration of how nothing ever stays the same, not even the Rockies. Despite the appearance of timelessness and permanence, geologists are discovering how these rocks will meet their end - a sobering perspective on time, place and the enormity of the earth's Geologic Journey.
Geologic Journey: The Canadian Shield tells the story of the rocks that were present throughout the very beginnings of the Earth's formation: the rocks of the immovable Canadian Shield. The Shield is one of the true last frontiers of human exploration on our planet: its underground world still leaves much to be discovered.
Geologic time has shaped the rocks of the Shield into a complex ensemble. Geologists take viewers down into the bowels of the earth to demonstrate how billions of tonnes of metal mineralized here, after the crust was transformed by huge chunks of molten rock from outer space. Audiences are led on an expedition in search of the oldest rock formations in the world, deep into remote Labrador territory. And like fools, we follow prospectors in their hunt for gold, which they believe is buried in the mysterious remains of an ancient mountain chain, 2.7 billions years old.
Geologic Journey: The Appalachians is a trip through the gentle, rolling landscape of eastern North America, a landscape that is deceptive and misleading. Beneath its calm and steady appearance hides a violent and active past.
Audiences are given an insider's perspective as our expert geologists attempt to trace the roots of this tumultuous past. From studying the sediment deposits at Anticosti Island, to rebuilding the history of one ofthe most significant mass extinctions, 443 million years ago, scientists are piecing together the elements that continue to shape this diverse region. We are led along the stunning coast, from Newfoundland to North Carolina, to better understand how ancient landmasses separated into Europe and America. And the ground shakes beneath us as scientists reveal the fractures in what is a very active earthquake zone.
The explorations and observations these scientists undertake in the Appalachians today make it possible for us to add a few missing pages in the great history book of the North American continent.
