作者:(英國)托馬斯·哈代(Thomas Hardy)
托馬斯·哈代(1840—1928),是英國小說家、詩人。他是橫跨兩個世紀的作家,早期和中期的創作以小說為主,繼承和發揚了維多利亞時代的文學傳統;晚期以出色的詩歌開拓了英國20世紀的文學。哈代生於英國西南部的一個小村莊。他父親是石匠,但愛好音樂。父母都重視對哈代的文化教育。哈代8歲開始在村里上學,一年後轉到郡城一所學校,學習拉丁文和拉丁文學。1856年哈代離開學校,給一名建築師當學徒。1862年前往倫敦,給建築師當繪圖員,並在倫敦大學進修語言,開始文學創作。哈代從倫敦回到家鄉當了幾年建築師後,放棄了建築職業,專門從事文學創作。他最初寫作詩歌,後因無緣發表,改事小說創作。1867—1868年完成第一部小說《窮人與貴婦》,但未能出版。首次發表的小說是《計出無奈》(1871),接著是《綠林蔭下》(1872)、《一雙湛藍的眼睛》(1873),他的成名作是第四部小說《遠離塵囂》(1874)。一些評論家認為1878年發表的《還鄉》是他最出色的作品。他的另一部重要作品是《卡斯特橋市長》(1886);他最優秀的小說是《德伯家的苔絲》(1891);而《無名的裘德》(1896)卻招致強烈的攻擊,這使哈代發誓再不寫小說,自此全力作詩,發表了《威塞克斯詩集》(1898)、《今昔詩篇》(1901)等8個詩集。此外還有《林地居民》(1887)等許多長篇小說和4個短篇小說集。哈代一生共發表了近20部長篇小說,其中最著名的當推《德伯家的苔絲》、《無名的裘德》、《還鄉》和《卡斯特橋市長》,詩8集共918首,此外,還有許多以“威塞克斯故事”為總名的中短篇小說,以及長篇史詩劇《列王》。
