作者簡介
作者：（英國）托馬斯·哈代（Thomas Hardy）
托馬斯·哈代（1840—1928），是英國小說家、詩人。他是橫跨兩個世紀的作家，早期和中期的創作以小說為主，繼承和發揚了維多利亞時代的文學傳統；晚期以出色的詩歌開拓了英國20世紀的文學。哈代生於英國西南部的一個小村莊。他父親是石匠，但愛好音樂。父母都重視對哈代的文化教育。哈代8歲開始在村里上學，一年後轉到郡城一所學校，學習拉丁文和拉丁文學。1856年哈代離開學校，給一名建築師當學徒。1862年前往倫敦，給建築師當繪圖員，並在倫敦大學進修語言，開始文學創作。哈代從倫敦回到家鄉當了幾年建築師後，放棄了建築職業，專門從事文學創作。他最初寫作詩歌，後因無緣發表，改事小說創作。1867—1868年完成第一部小說《窮人與貴婦》，但未能出版。首次發表的小說是《計出無奈》（1871），接著是《綠林蔭下》（1872）、《一雙湛藍的眼睛》（1873），他的成名作是第四部小說《遠離塵囂》（1874）。一些評論家認為1878年發表的《還鄉》是他最出色的作品。他的另一部重要作品是《卡斯特橋市長》（1886）；他最優秀的小說是《德伯家的苔絲》（1891）；而《無名的裘德》（1896）卻招致強烈的攻擊，這使哈代發誓再不寫小說，自此全力作詩，發表了《威塞克斯詩集》（1898）、《今昔詩篇》（1901）等8個詩集。此外還有《林地居民》（1887）等許多長篇小說和4個短篇小說集。哈代一生共發表了近20部長篇小說，其中最著名的當推《德伯家的苔絲》、《無名的裘德》、《還鄉》和《卡斯特橋市長》，詩8集共918首，此外，還有許多以“威塞克斯故事”為總名的中短篇小說，以及長篇史詩劇《列王》。
