In the beginning of Paragraph 8, the author tells us that the public are much concern about the way companies use to deal with some problems like ethnic diversity. I found that such problems are relative to employees. So companies are claimed to have ability of treat employees well on different conditions. We can infer from that the rights of employees are become more and more important. And that could have an impact on its social imagine. Provided that a company couldn’t pay any attention to these, the loss it gets is not only a worker, but much out of it can think about. Then the author uses two examples to illustrate how serious the negative impression caused by decisions mistake made by management is. In the second Instance of Texaco, I found difficult to understand one [a] phrase: it is “within its own ranks”. The “rank” in the dictionary means “the membership of a group or organization”. So I supposed it means “internal of the Texaco”.
The author changes his topic from negative impression to positive outcome when companies treat their employees well. There, in the 9th paragraph, the author brings up some good ways to manage employees appropriately and efficiently. The first way is to celebrate differences among people. thus every people will feel company attaches importance to his or her contributions. And his or her work can be recognized. The efficiency will improve naturally. The second one is help employee to find fit position. Everyone has his or her specialty. So a company should view every employee from different lights and actively find his specialty. The third one is from the Hearst Corporation. From the example, I can see the firm treat [treats] employees equally whether he is a unique talent or only an operator of printing presses. If someone has contributions to company or does something worthy of recognition, his family will receive a present from company to express its appreciation. Why the author uses “a small gift from a prestigious department store” there? In my opinion, the author aims to show the company respect and treat employees very well by choosing a choice, prestigious department store and buy an excellent gift for them. However I also can’t understand why “receive the gifts at home” helps connect the worlds of home life and work experience. Does the author use the “the world” in a wrong way for I think we have only one world? So I read it [the]sentence again and used dictionary at same time. I found I made a mistake. The “world” here means “a group of things such as countries or animals, or an area of human activity or understanding” not “the planet we live”. After that, it is clear to know that the author wants us to know such good action help to combine the live with work and it is very humanizing.
