Introduction to the Glasgow Caledonian University
Glasgow Caledonian, Scotland's third largest university (after Glasgow and Edinburgh), is the result of the 1993 merger of Glasgow Polytechnic and Queen's College, Glasgow. Since then, it has had its ups and downs.
On the plus side, it has consolidated on one city-centre campus thanks to an investment of 50m; previously it was spread across five sites. The university's health faculty is there, as well as a sports centre and a range of clubs and bars.
Glasgow Caledonian's courses in chemistry and physics and consumer studies have fared well, along with the health faculty. The university believes that about One Fifth of nurses and healthcare professionals working in Scotland were educated here. The university has also given birth to two biotech companies - Glycologic and Biopta - and feels more confident than a comparable institution south of the border might about keeping research money coming in.
The university has a huge number of local students and is strongly committed to vocational and sandwich degrees. Glasgow Caledonian has a powerful commitment to widening access to university education - it says recent figures show that 27% of first-degree students come from backgrounds not normally associated with studying at university - though this endeavour may have a cost in terms of the number of students who, for example, do not finish their first year.
Not all first years are offered accommodation, although priority is given to those living further away.
Another problem the university faced was losing three principals in a five-year period. Following one of the Departures in 1997, an inquiry by the funding council criticised academic and managerial standards.
Alumni include Olympic gold-medal curler Rhona Martin, Scottish finance minister Andy Kerr and former footballer Pat Nevin.
