《"他者"的聲音:吉恩·瑞斯西印度小說中的抵抗話語》試用新歷史主義與後殖民主義文論解讀英國現當代小說家吉恩。瑞斯的西印度小說(《藻海無邊》、《黑暗中的航行》及四個短篇小說)。通過“逆寫”英國19世紀的殖民話語場,瑞斯的作品試圖改寫被歐洲中心主義意識形態不斷刻寫的殖民歷史,從而給那些一度被邊緣化和被迫失語的西印度“他者”們以說話的機會。通過質問、挪用、消解歐洲中心主義話語,昔日的“賤民”們終於發出了自己的聲音。由於“閾限空間”內部存在的差異,他們的聲音表現出多樣性特徵,而作為一個整體,這些聲音則構成了一種強有力的後殖民抵抗話語。
為使其殖民統治合法化並長期維持下去,大英帝國利用各種“經典”文本建構了一個龐大的殖民話語場。在這個話語場中,西印度人被塑造成下賤的“他者”,並被剝奪了說話的權利。作為一種抵抗話語,瑞斯的作品向這個話語場發起了反擊,揭發了大英帝國“文明使命”的謊言,暴露了殖民話語內部的矛盾,並深入探討了後殖民身份問題。由於歐洲對西印度群島殖民化所導致的文化混雜,瑞斯筆下的克里奧耳白人主人公安托瓦內特與安娜·摩根被迫置身於樓梯井狀的“第三度空間”,她們的文化身份也因文化界限的模糊而無法得到清楚的定義。這種搖擺不定的“夾縫”處境給她們帶來了痛苦的經歷,但同時也為抵抗以自我/他者二元對立為基礎的殖民表述提供了有利地位。在與殖民者的交鋒中,.以克里斯托芬為代表的克里奧耳黑人與混血人種則以加勒比地域文化為根基,以奧比巫術、反殖烈火、故意沉默、身體、克里奧耳英語等為武器直面殖民霸權,用暴力與非暴力革命方式實踐著自己的反抗。這些抵抗話語為挑戰歐洲中心話語、改寫殖民歷史奠定了堅實的基礎。
